Raked by ferocious Santa Ana winds, explosive wildfires on the edge of Los Angeles and in the foothills outside the city burned a psychiatric hospital and scores of other structures Tuesday and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people.
CBS News producer Sean Gallitz said he could see an nearly unbroken fire line burning ferociously along the top of the hill side from nearly 20 miles away from on the 101 freeway.
Hundreds of firefighters were working through the night to try to prevent the fire from reaching Santa Paula and Ventura cities.
According to officials, the cities of Ventura and Santa Paula are also threatened. More than 800 homes were evacuated there.

Evacuation orders were expanded to include houses in Ventura, which is 19km southwest and has 106,000 residents. "Really mother nature is going to decide when we have the ability to put it out because it is pushing hard".
The gusty conditions are expected to shift toward Southern California on Monday and last through Thursday, with some areas of Ventura and Los Angeles counties possibly experiencing isolated gusts as high as 80 miles per hour. Lorenzen added that all firefighters can do at this stage is try and get ahead of the fire and protect structures.
"The fire growth is just absolutely exponential", Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen was quoted by ABC News as saying.
