A Mega Millions tickets costs $2. Powerball odds are one-in-about 292 million.
And even if they do know, people often don't bother to check their tickets once they hear there was no jackpot victor or the winning ticket was bought out of state.
According to the insurance company Allstate, your chances of winning the Powerball are about 1 in 290 million, and the likelihood of you taking home the Mega Millions are roughly 1 in 258 million.
