HTC has announced a new version of the HTC Vive, dubbed the HTC Vive Pro, during CES 2018 in Las Vegas. This upcoming adapter leverages Intel's WiGg technology to enable a wireless virtual reality experience with low latency, letting you cut the cord between the Vive and your PC. The Vive Pro offers two OLED display with a combined resolution of 2880x1600, a boost from the 2180 x 1200 of the current Vive.
The headset also interestingly now features dual-front-facing cameras accessible to developers, who can presumably use them for inside-out tracking and mixed reality applications. As it seems, its announcement might come sooner than expected, as rumors indicate that we might see an HTC Vive Pro at CES 2018 today.
But for those interested in owning the next step, HTC hasn't committed to exact release dates - for the Vive Pro, or for a proper successor to the now available Vive.
Additionally, HTC announced plans to release its own Vive Wireless Adapter, which, like the TPCast, will plug into a Vive-equipped computer to broadcast its video signal wirelessly.
The Vive Pro and the wireless adaptor are two features that may help foster more interest from mainstream consumers. "Wireless VR has been on almost every VR user's wish list since the technology was unveiled", Frank Soqui, GM of the virtual reality group at Intel, said in a statement. Consumer Technology Association forecasted Monday the VR market will see record growth in 2018 with AR/VR headsets and eyewear selling 4.9 million units in the United States in 2018 (a more than 25 percent increase from 2017).
Beyond the blue colouring and a slightly tighter design, the Vive Pro also features a redesigned head strap, making it easier for users to resize to suit their unique noggins. These VR previews are "interactive glimpses of content that give customers a room-scale preview of an experience and the opportunity to interact with content before purchasing or subscribing". The native VR video player Vive Video is now pulling in content from one of the world's largest ad-free open video platforms.
HTC's update to its VR platform comes at an important time for the VR landscape.
Pricing and availability of the Vive Pro price wasn't detailed.
