It then brought in Gore Verbinski to take over director duties, but now it will need to find someone else to take the film to the finish line. Let's just run down this list for a quick recap.
Verbinski is the third director to leave the project, following in the footsteps of Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman. Liman eventually bowed out as well, in all likelihood because he wasn't satisfied with whatever form the script was taking. This is an unusual move so late in the game, as the Fox film has been in casting mode and has been gearing up to shoot in New Orleans in March.
As for Gambit, the news is considerably worse as Deadline is reporting that its director Gore Verbinski has now exited the project, despite production supposedly due to start in March. It's not clear what the reasoning is at the time of this writing. Verbinski was given the director's chair in October, and there was no reason given for his departure from the project just three months later.
That would certainly fit with the comic book canon of Marvel's Gambit character, who was a member of the New Orleans Thieves' Guild before linking up with the X-Men. "We know that when we get those right, the movie succeeds so we want to make sure we get Gambit right because we want him to be the beginning of a whole new franchise".
The film has a script by Josh Zetumer and is being produced by Tatum, Reid Carolin, Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner. I'm hardly saying directing is easy, but we've underestimated Tatum his entire career.
Deadline.com said Thursday that scheduling conflicts forced the filmmaker to back out of helming 20th Century Fox's superhero movie, which is set for theatrical release February 14, 2019. And finally, ask yourselves: Does it really matter who directs this movie? At this point, that isn't expected to change, but stay tuned.
