A lot. That much is unavoidable.
Words can't even begin to describe how sick Knicks fans feel for Porzingis, who was in the midst of a breakout season. His season is over and his estimated to return in 9 to 12 months after surgery.
"We were with him last night and obviously it was a hard situation for everyone, especially him", Knicks general manager Scott Perry said.
Porzingis's career has always been hamstrung by the dysfunction around him. Yes, it probably would, the Knicks if they got Lebron would probably be one of the best teams in the East if LeBron came to MSG. We're just six years removed from the 2011 National Basketball Association draft that saw future All-Stars Kawhi Leonard (No. 15), Jimmy Butler (No. 30) and Isaiah Thomas (No. 60) all get picked outside the lottery. If New York chose to wait and offer Porzingis an extension in the summer of 2019, it would create an additional $10 million in cap space for the club that summer.
Perry dodged a question about his concern level for next season.
"We know that he's going to attack his rehab and post-surgery in the way that he prepares himself as a player, " Perry said. ". [But] he'll be back as strong as ever". And that was our message to him and that's his message to us. Just when it seemed things finally might be moving in the right direction, the Knicks suddenly find themselves back where they have been so often the past two decades: square one.
Porzingis is eligible for a five-year, $150-million contract extension this summer, which only adds more drama to his situation.
With the prominence of Porzingis gone, this season could turn into a needed evaluation for bench players to show they belong on a rebuilding team.
"It's not going to deter us from what we've been trying to accomplish since we got here", Perry said. What if NY is on his radar this summer? "And we'll deal with that at the appropriate time".
"It's definitely a tough blow", Lee said. With the trade deadline arriving at 3 p.m. Thursday the Knicks may as well be active sellers because the present is lost and future is shaky at best. "We know that he wants to become a great player, a top player in this league".
The Bucks won the game 103-89.
In an announcement via the franchise's official Twitter account, the Knicks provided the most devastating news of the season: Porzingis has torn the ACL in his left knee. Jeff Hornacek exchanged words with his star player.
"Obviously, he was devastated that he has that injury".
Lee crossed paths with Porzingis in the training room. "But then he instantly switched to like, 'I've got to take on this new journey. I'm ready for it'". "When he took off the ground, he was traveling at a speed of 15½ miles per hour, roughly at 68 degrees up, so it took him about 1.3 seconds to go from point A to point B". However, Enes Kanter will miss the matchup due to re-stitching of the cut in his mouth, according to Ian Begley of ESPN.
