It was a golden idea that sprouted on their flight home from the Sochi Olympics.
The Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation, with a stunning free skate by 15-year-old Alina Zagitova, the European champion, were guaranteed silver, the team's second medal of the Pyeongchang Games.
The team event is contested by 10 teams. And what better way to close their illustrious careers than standing on the podium as one? They came together in an unreal way this year and proved that nice guys (and gals) definitely don't finish last.
"It's a special partnership", Virtue said in a recent interview. "I survived, and I get to enjoy possibly a gold medal". That brought the Canadians final score up to 73, well ahead of the competition.
Monday morning at Gangneung Ice Arena unfolded in dramatic fashion.
Chan, who's struggled all season, took the ice first for Canada and could have crumpled under the pressure. Daleman's performance clinched gold because neither Russian Federation or the USA could catch the Canadians once Virtue and Moir stepped on the ice.
Chan put it perfectly (and humbly as ever), acknowledging that it was truly a team effort: "I'm an Olympic gold medalist now, thanks to a team". I just sat there like a statue.
"Patrick", Radford said, "you don't owe anybody anything". We'll always be there for you.
Virtue and Moir were the designated flag bearers for the competing as part of Team Canada.
The Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) secured the silver medal after Alina Zagitova put in an incredible performance to win gold in the women's free skate event.
Nagasu made some figure skating history, accomplishing her rare feat just 21 seconds into the women's free skate.
And don't try to tell Chan that this team gold means anything less than an individual medal.
That's the situation Gabrielle Daleman found herself in when she went out for her free skate program in the figure skating team event.
"Of course I was nervous, I didn't want to let my team down".
"I'm really happy with my skate".
The inherent danger present in the Goose lift is why it isn't done in competition very often, and it's one of the big reasons that Virtue and Moir are so dynamic in the ice dance world. Already decided, it was like star sprinter Usain Bolt taking the baton with no other teams in the race.
"We also needed to deliver a message and prove that we're ready and trained", Virtue said.
"I will judge our success on the generation that comes after us, if good skaters emerge that will speak volumes to us".
Within an hour of the figure skating gold, Canadian snowboarder Laurie Blouin earned silver in the women's slopestyle. "So we wanted to change it, make it a little bit better", Moir told reporters. "We take so much pride in that". We're proud of ourselves that we set our goals and committed to that. And if you ask his coach, Walia, "I think there's a couple more great Olympic moments to come". Even Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann was feeling their performance, tweeting his appreciation of their dramatic portrayal of the ill-fated lovers. Chan took a year off after Sochi, while Virtue and Moir took a two-year hiatus.
