There's no guarantee the Patriots would have netted Sherman if they had pursued him.
Sherman became a star in Seattle, bringing a brash attitude and willingness to speak out on any topic to go along with his stellar play. But now it's real between a team on the way up, and Baldwin's team, which at the moment seems to have put on its downhill skis. That's one of the longer positions in the draft, a spot where you can find a good guy in the middle rounds, where they found Witherspoon a year ago. Or have you forgotten the 42-7 loss to the Rams at the Clink Dec. 17? How much of this falls on Pete Carroll, too?
It's true the defense that day because of injuries was missing Sherman, Kam Chancellor and Cliff Avril. Top-tier defensive players may want to play alongside of him.
Perhaps Sherman rushing into this contract without taking visits with others teams was a mistake.
Adam Scheffer of ESPN first reported the free agent signing.
"You're excited after a game, you're winning", he said.
The Seahawks have been crumbling recently, letting many of their core players go without clear replacements.
In the end, the Niners' deal made the most sense. In 2019 and 2020, Sherman's base salary is either $7 or $8 million with the same incentives package. They also agreed on another thing: the Seahawks' decision to release Sherman didn't happen overnight, and there were fractures in the relationship that predated any contract talks.
"Sherman received a $3 million signing bonus".
For all intents and purposes, Sherman is only guaranteed $7 million through 2018.
Because Shead played in only the final two games of last season after spending the rest of the year on Physically Unable to Perform list, the National Football League had recently determined that Shead's 2017 contract could "toll" and he would have to play in 2018 for Seattle on the same deal. His Achilles tendon was repaired in mid-November, and his left ankle had surgery last month to remove bone spurs.
Sherman said of his call to Seahawks general manager John Schneider: "They said they wouldn't be able to match that and he thought it was a solid deal". If Sherman played in all 16 games, but won no awards, he could make up to $10 million. Still, it's a hedge for the 49ers as Sherman continues recovery from a torn Achilles tendon suffered November 9 at Arizona.
Shead tore his ACL in Seattle's playoff loss to the Falcons in 2017 and only played in two games past year. Reports also noted that Sherman spent the past week saying goodbye to his teammates and is expected not to return to Seattle this season. The sports news website said that Sherman's release will not be the last for the team's veteran players. "It was such a great opportunity".
One angry fan posted a video of himself burning his Richard Sherman Jersey. "I admit it's kinda weird having to cheer for you now", wrote one, Candle STAC Park. "And now they've got to build it all the way back up and are energized, I think from the inside, to do so". "I didn't abandon anybody".
Whether 49er fans or any fan likes this move or not, it won't bother Sherman. "We've got a lot of work to do, but we feel like we're well on our way". "I'm thankful, and it's motivation for me". The 49ers have skin in the game.
