Florida State earned a second-round matchup with top-seeded Xavier on Sunday.
"I thought the story for the first half was our guys were connected defensively, and I thought their effort was as a result of respect we have for Missouri and some of the tapes we've seen", coach Leonard Hamilton said.
Resilience is a theme that's been constant all season for Missouri, which ended a pair of three-game losing streaks with wins on the road.
Missouri (20-13), however, was on the other end of a bounce-back, when, after taking a 7-1 lead, it gave up an 11-0 run that set the tone for Florida State's dominant first half.
It made no difference how badly he or any of the eight healthy, eligible players in Missouri's huddle wanted this one.
"We've got to pass the ball!" coach Cuonzo Martin yelled in frustration after a Missouri turnover midway through the half. "We play defense first to score and we weren't doing that at all". However, in just his first two minutes of college basketball, Michael Porter Jr. sustained an injury that would eventually require spinal surgery to fix the L3-L4 spinal discs.
The first half had Florida State written all over it as the Seminoles maintained as high as a 22-point lead. Not only that, but Mizzou has Michael Porter Jr. back on the court after missing pretty much the entire season with a back injury. "We weren't playing Mizzou ball".
In the locker room at halftime, Martin wrote one word on the team's whiteboard: fight. Missouri couldn't find its rhythm while working potential National Basketball Association lottery pick Michael Porter Jr.in the mix during his second game this season after back surgery.
Kassius Robertson led Mizzou in scoring with 19 points on 6-13 shooting.
Tigers fans were hype when Porter, Jr. took the floor. "I'll just talk to the people close to me", Porter said.
Kabengele wasn't the only Seminole reserve to have a big game, as Trent Forrest stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, eight assists, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
Then, Jontay Porter said, "Something happened again". Florida State went into intermission up 42-20, and all 10 Seminoles who played scored.
To be clear, Porter, Jr.'s talent is not the question here. As in the Georgia game, the first in his return from back surgery, the explosiveness of the prized prospect simply wasn't there.
Porter, Jr. left Missouri's 2017-18 season opener against Iowa State less than two minutes into the game with what was believed to be a hip injury.
His coach said he knows Porter will be a better player a month from now.
Freshman Jeremiah Tilmon said after Friday's game that he won't test NBA Draft waters.
"Spring break is coming up, so I'll probably relax at the beach a little bit", Porter said. Both said they'll take some to think and talk to friends and family before making any decisions.
