The Trump-Abe meeting is taking place ahead of the probable talks between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in May. It is Abe's second visit to Trump's Florida estate.
If Trump raises the issue of a free trade agreement between Japan and the United States, Abe might be pressured to make concessions, Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported. He also said they are likely to discuss free trade, as this is an issue of mutual interest.
The president previously hosted Abe at Mar-a-Lago in February of 2017.
During the two-day summit April 17 and 18, the two leaders will pledge their commitment to "peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region", said White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. And after golfing together for a second time when Trump visited Japan during his Asia tour last year, Abe recalled how his grandfather, a former premier of Japan began the tradition of "golf diplomacy" with President Dwight D. Eisenhower began the tradition of U.S. -Japan golf diplomacy 60 years prior.
It said only that Abe and Trump would meet at Trump's Florida estate to "discuss global campaign to maintain maximum pressure on North Korea" and to "explore ways to expand fair and reciprocal trade and investment ties between the United States and Japan".
