We chose to abstain from talking about it at the time because a PS5 launch in 2018 sounded laughable, particularly given that the PS4 Pro has only been out for around 18 months. The sources said that multi-year plans for projects are always shifting, but it may be too much of a stretch to think that the PlayStation 5 will arrive this year. They mentioned that the release date could be moved to a later date and Sony is apparently just trying to find the right moment to release its new hardware for maximum profit and exposure. The PlayStation 5 release date is unlikely before 2020, so the PS4 owners do not have to worry about upgrading just yet. If the next PlayStation was set to be released sometime in the next couple of years then there would likely be a lot more talk about it amongst developers and other industry figures.
However, according to Kotaku's sources, the PlayStation 5 console is unlikely to release in 2019.
A 2020 release matches secondhand rumors Schreier heard at the Game Developers Conference this year.
"Super early devkits are often PCs with the CPU and GPU", said one of Schreier's sources, who said that while early PlayStation 5 development kits may be in the wild, it does not necessarily mean that the console is launching soon. However, recent rumors have suggested that Sony has been giving out PlayStation 5 devkits to certain studios, with the report stating that Sony has asked studios to keep the devkits in locked rooms and restrict access to the device. Therefore, not many in the developer studios are supposed to know about it all for now.
If we take a look at how Sony has done things in the past, we see that there was a gap of 7 years between the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
While Microsoft has been on a tear making the Xbox One backwards compatible with older games, the PS4 can't run games from the PS3. To talk about the latest version of the PlayStation series, we have to talk about the Sony PlayStation 4 Pro.
If Sony has any hardware announcements to make or to tease, that could happen during E3 2018 in June.
