Cohen reportedly negotiated a $1.6 million confidentiality deal in 2017 between the former RNC deputy finance chair and LA-based venture capitalist Elliott Broidy, 60, and a former Playboy model, who claims he impregnated her. Broidy tendered his resignation on Friday afternoon in the wake of the explosive report by the Wall Street Journal.
"I acknowledge I had a consensual relationship with a Playboy Playmate", Broidy said via a spokesperson.
'At the end of our relationship, this woman shared with me that she was pregnant. "She alone decided that she did not want to continue with the pregnancy and I offered to help her financially during this hard period", he said.
According to another source familiar with Broidy's agreement with the former Playboy model, she was to be paid the $1.6 million over a period of two years on a quarterly basis, and the first payment was made in December 2017.
The involvement of this lawyer, who was reportedly named in the Broidy NDA as Paul Patterson, complicates an already convoluted story.
Investigators who raided Cohen's properties are said to have sought records of payments to two women who say they had an affair with Trump; materials connected to the 2005 "Access Hollywood" tape featuring Trump; recordings of Cohen's conversations with associates; attorney-client communications between Trump and Cohen; and Cohen's electronic devices and financial documents.
A person familiar with the agreement between Broidy and the woman, who was not identified, said Cohen used the same pseudonyms he made for Trump and Daniels.
Broidy has been a prominent supporter of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, and contributed to the then-candidate's fundraising efforts as vice chairman of the Trump Victory Fund, which combined state and national Republican committees. Daniels at the time of the payment was being represented by Keith Davidson, the same attorney who represented the woman in the Broidy negotiations, according to the Journal.
Cohen and Davidson did not immediate respond to requests for comment.
Cohen's property was raided earlier this week by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents said to be looking into allegations of bank fraud, wire fraud, and campaign finance law violations. Cohen also works for the committee as a national deputy finance chairman. "Although I had not previously hired Mr. Cohen, I retained Mr. Cohen after he informed me about his prior relationship with Mr. Davidson", Broidy said.
The deal bears remarkable similarities to an agreement reached between Donald Trump and porn star Stormy Daniels that was signed by Cohen and Daniels, but not Trump. Just last month, Broidy hosted a Los Angeles fundraiser for Trump. Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford, is now suing Trump and Cohen to have the agreement tossed out. McDougal said her lawyer at the time secretly negotiated with Cohen on a deal with American Media Inc, publisher of the National Enquirer, which paid her $150,000 in 2016 to keep quiet. AMI has asked the judge to dismiss the case, arguing that the deal is protected under the First Amendment.
