When red-hot lava buries plants and shrubs, the burning vegetation produces methane, a colorless gas that burns blue, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
Still, "cracks near the Puna Geothermal Company are active and producing lava that slowly flows into the property, which destroyed the old Hawaii Geothermal Project in an area adjacent to the PGV", it said.
Low lava fountains were erupting from a almost continuous two-mile portion of the series of fissures that have opened up in the ground, scientists said. Accumulations of cooled, hardened lava created a thick, 30-foot (9.14-meter) high wall of solid volcanic rock channeling fresh lava streams from fissures to the south, away from the PGV plant, USGS scientists said.
Kauahikaua said this is the second time he has seen the blue flames.
Kilauea began erupting lava in a residential neighborhood on May 3. The nearby Gemini Observatory in Hilo, Hawaii, captured a time-lapse glimpse at Kilauea from Monday night into Tuesday morning as the light from the volcano and its almost two-dozen fissures beamed through the clouds. Workers are rushing to shut down the power plant to prevent the uncontrollable release of toxic gases from the site.
Kilauea's eruption on the Big Island began on May 3 at a distance of 24 kilometers from the plant.
"Right now, they're in a safe state", Mike Kaleikini, senior director of Hawaii affairs for the Puna Geothermal Venture plant, said of the wells.
Officials have also warned residents tobeware of "laze", or lava haze, a toxic gas containing tiny shards of glass which is produced when lava flows collide with the sea.
Late on Saturday, a fast-flowing stream of lava pouring from one of the active fissures also reached Highway 137, which hugs the island's eastern coast. The state recreation area is about 45 miles east of the Kilauea Volcano.
Hawaii Civil Defense Agency Administrator Talmadge Magno said Tuesday the cracks in Highway 130 that closed the route for a time earlier this month have not been widening.
One person has suffered a serious leg injury from flying lava spatter.
"It's the end now because the lava rolled across it, wiping out the entire northeast section of Leilani Estates", Hickman said, who said the fountains were coming from fissures 6, 19, and 22.
