Jon Marchessault, William Karlsson and Reilly Smith in full sync. T.J. Oshie added two assists. Ten goals by nine different players, four lead changes and some controversy, to be sure, which we'll get to later.
Wilson's account of the exchange didn't really line up with what the Golden Knights' forward had to say. The 2011 Boston Bruins were the last team to rally after losing the opener when they beat the Vancouver Canucks in seven games.
With the score tied 4-4, Wilson laid out Marchessault at open ice, which stirred the Vegas bench. The Golden Knights' playoff scoring leader, well behind the play, had released the puck with plenty of advance notice for Wilson to ease up.
Wilson, meanwhile, didn't feel he delivered a dirty hit on Marchessault.
The Golden Knights' playoff pregame shows have been a celebration of Vegas showmanship, and their first Final game started with an extravaganza that included archers, a trebuchet and a spectacular light show. The referees huddled but decided not to issue a major penalty, instead giving Wilson two minutes for interference. The hit was shoulder-to-shoulder, but its late nature left the Golden Knights calling on the National Hockey League to discipline a repeat offender who's become a pariah in these playoffs. "I never see him coming".
"I think the league is going to take care of it", Marchessault said. "We know what type of player he is out there..."
After the game, there was plenty of chatter about Wilson's hit on Marchessault, and some discussion about possible supplementary discipline. "I have an away white, so looking forward to that". "I'm just finishing my check", Wilson said.
Wilson is acutely aware of his reputation by now. Two teams, the best in their respective conferences and divisions, will square off against one another with the sport's greatest prize on the line. Trotz said he thought the Capitals were going to the power play. "When you play my physical style, you're going to have that reputation", Wilson said. I trust myself. I play the game hard.
