Serena Williams is officially back! She had almost as many unforced errors, 25, as winners, 29.
"The customer is a girl or a woman who believes in herself, or wants to believe in herself; maybe she's feeling unconfident that day", Williams told WWD.
She saved three break points in an eight-minute-plus 10th game before taking victory, setting up a second-round clash with Australia's Ashleigh Barty. One is that the tightness of the trousers helps her blood circulation.
She then paused for a second then added with a slightly lower voice and a hint of a smile: "I think deep down we all know the answer to that". "It definitely has little functionality to it".
"I'm not going to play if I don't think [I can win]", she proclaims.
Williams stunned in her opening round win over Czech Kristyna Pliskova by wearing a black catsuit.
The Women's Tennis Association - the governing body of the women's tennis tour - is mulling a rules change to protect seedings and rankings for players returning from maternity leave.
The 23-time major victor won her first-round match against Kristyna Pliskova in straight sets to advance to the next stage - and she did it dressed in the most memorable tournament attire seen thus far at Roland Garros.
In every category, Williams' achievements dwarf her opponent's, bar one - Pliskova holds the WTA record for aces in a single match: 31 at the 2016 Australian Open.
"I knew that after Pliskova's first game of serving, I said, 'OK, I have to serve really well today, ' " Williams said.
Serena gave birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. on September 1, in an emergency c-section.
The last time she had been spotted on a court was in a first-round loss to Naomi Osaka in Miami in March. But she will be ready to fight for it.
So how much more hard is it for a mother than a father to play top level tennis?
"People would say I was born a guy, all because of my arms, or because I'm strong", she recalls. I can show Olympia that I struggled, but now I'm happy with who I am and what I am and what I look like... Serena has won 12 of her last 13 matches on clay court.
But the internet is filled with conspiracy theories that she was born a man. Theories that Williams is well aware of as she wrote an open letter to her mother, thanking her for her support over the issue, last year. "I'm a super hands-on mom", Williams said.
"It's not easy to come back with everything I have been through and there has been so many other women that have been through the same thing, and we just don't talk about it".
The pair have played just once previously - also at a Grand Slam.
