Kilauea volcano is near-constantly erupting from vents either on its summit (caldera) or on the rift zones. This is the highest rate ever measured at the summit area, according to the United States Geological Society's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
The incident didn't trigger tsunami warnings due to the small size of the natural disaster.
"We understand and commiserate with our community and visitors about the prolonged closure, but we can not provide safe access to the Kīlauea section of the park as long as these very unpredictable dangers threaten the safety of park staff and visitors", said Park Superintendent Cindy Orlando. "This has led to numerous magnitude-3 or greater earthquakes, as well as many more smaller ones".
More eruptions like the one that occurred today are possible in the coming months as the deflation process continues, Cindi Preller, geologist and duty scientist at the Oahu office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told ABC News.
Residents in this area should heed warnings from Civil Defense officials and be prepared to evacuate with little notice.
The eruption has cut power, cell reception and county water in the area, CNN reported.
Another 2,000 people have already been evacuated from Leilani Estates, an area further west where dozens of homes have been devoured or cut off by rivers of lava streaming over the landscape since May 3.
An estimated 500 people live in the greater Kapoho area, but Snyder said it was not immediately clear how many residents, if any, chose to stay behind.
Officials warned residents about the presence of laze, a potentially unsafe mix of hydrochloric acid, steam and tiny glass particles in the air.
Lava destroyed hundreds of homes in mostly rural Hawaii area overnight, a county spokeswoman said Tuesday.
Snyder said it was hard to count homes in that area from the air because of steam produced from lava entering the ocean.
"Multiple observations from field crews and overflights suggest the Fissure 8 fountain is less vigorous this evening, with maximum heights of 130-160 feet", USGS reported last night.
