North Korea possesses nuclear weapons and long-range missiles believed to be capable of hitting anywhere in the U.S.
US President Donald Trump said Monday he believes his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will "work out very nicely" as senior officials made last-minute preparations a day before the two leaders sit down together.
"Trump is fully prepared for the meeting tomorrow", he said. "Create peace and great prosperity for his land".
The talks will focus on reaching an agreement on the denuclearisation of North Korea in exchange for the easing of economic and diplomatic sanctions. A few hours after that, Balakrishnan was on hand when Trump stepped off Air Force One.
Earlier on Sunday evening, Trump arrived at Singapore's Paya Lebar Air Base and is now staying at the Shangri-La Hotel.
So the summit was almost derailed by talk from Trump's hawkish National Security Advisor John Bolton of a "Libya model" of disarmament.
Ahead of the meeting, Trump has dangled the carrot of a normalisation of diplomatic ties between the former foes and even a White House visit for Kim, which would confirm his arrival on the world stage. But any request for the U.S. to withdraw its 28,000 troops from South Korean bases would likely be rejected. While Kim has shown he's willing to bargain, O'Hanlon said, "Giving up his nuclear weapons is probably going to be the last step in that process, not the first step".
DPRK stands for the North's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
Preliminary meetings have already begun.

Instead of "rocket man", Trump has been calling Kim a "very honorable" man.
The United States and North Korea have been in a technical state of war for decades after the eruption of the 1950-1953 Korean War, which pitted U.S. -led U.N. troops backing Seoul against Pyongyang's forces that were aided by China.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that veteran diplomat Sung Kim is leading the US delegation in a working group meeting Monday at the city-state's Ritz Carlton hotel. "North Korea relationship, which can be attributed to their vision".
You would never know something as historic as the Trump-Kim summit was about to happen in the city state of Singapore. The leaders are spending the night at hotels about a half-mile apart in the upscale shopping area in Tanglin.
Still, some Singaporeans are getting into the swing of things.
The clearest benchmarks about what the U.S.is seeking from the summit, however, have come from Pompeo rather than Trump.
Close US ally Japan has urged Trump to bring up the decades-old issue of its citizens abducted in 1970s and 1980s to train Pyongyang's spies in Japanese language and customs.
Trump went from one global leadership summit to another this weekend, leaving the G-7 conference in Canada to fly to Singapore. Long-time USA allies like Canada and Germany protested Trump-backed tariffs on their exports, and threatened to retaliate with their own tariffs on United States products.
Trump has had recent discussions with South Korean Moon Jae-in, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping - who all have vested interests in the outcome - about matters he plans to raise.
