The photo shows the giraffe in an empty Toys "R" Us, holding a suitcase and waving goodbye.
"I'm never going to have a job like Toys R Us", said long-time employee Patty Van Fossan, 54, from Boardroom, Ohio, who was among a group of workers at protests in NY, fighting for severance that they believe they are owed.
In a dire retail landscape, more than 8,000 United States shops closed in 2017, roughly double the average annual store closures in the previous decade, according to data from the International Council of Shopping Centres. Employees at the Boynton Beach, Florida, store made their frustrations known by hanging signs around the store and protesting outside, WPTV reported. Toys R Us' troubles have also shaken some big toy makers like Mattel and Hasbro. Her photo of Geoffrey the Giraffe leaving got the most attention, receiving almost 300,000 shares on Facebook.
The company announced earlier this year that all stores would close and had been slashing prices leading up to the final closing.
Toys R Us, which also owned the Babies R Us chain, was hobbled by $5 billion in debt as busy parents found shopping online more convenient.
An obvious frontrunner will be Party City, which hired Jamie Uitdenhowen, a former top executive at Toys "R" Us, as its chief merchandising officer in December 2017 (three months after Toys "R" Us filed for bankruptcy).
Tracey Mobley, who worked at Toys R Us for 25 years, said not providing severance to employees was "heartbreaking", during an interview with WPTV.
"I think Geoffrey the Giraffe signifies fun and childhood memories", a zoo representative told CBS San Antonio affiliate KENS.
- Well, it's the day we all knew was coming. and now it's here.
