That moved Verstappen just three points behind teammate Daniel Ricciardo, who in turn is 50 behind championship leader Vettel.
A grim-faced Daniel Ricciardo showed how upset he felt Saturday by claiming Red Bull had treated him unfairly in qualifying at the Austrian Grand Prix. Raikkonen grabbed second, but then ran off at Turn Two giving fellow-Finn Bottas a chance to recover second on the straight in a frantic opening lap.
The Australian had run second before a blister on his left-rear tyre dropped him back and prompted another pitstop.
Listen to Lewis Hamilton's team radio during the Austrian GP after his team failed to pit him during the safety vehicle.
The afternoon began unravelling on lap 15 when pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas retired with a gearbox problem.
"It was a very, very mature drive from him to make sure he had just enough left in the last 5-10 laps". Max Verstappen (Red Bull) 6.
"The margins in Formula 1 are so fine", said Horner.
Vettel leads the title race with 146 points ahead of Hamilton on 145, Raikkonen on 101 and Ricciardo on 96. I saw Kimi's start, he got pretty tight, I think he touched Lewis in the first turn even.
It was clear running for Mr. Hamilton, as he took Top Spot from Verstappen early in the session and never gave it up.
Race prediction: Bottas was very strong from pole previous year and I'm backing him to beat Hamilton to the win tomorrow.
Not only was Red Bull's victory from fourth on the grid unexpected, it represented the team's first at their own circuit in five attempts. I think that's characteristic of James but also a measure of how this team operates, where people will hold up a hand when they have made a mistake knowing that the team's attitude to mistakes is that they are things that they learn from rather than throw blame around for or cause great polemics within the team.
When Hamilton did pit, he came back out in fourth place. Red Bull made a mess of qualifying (see below) at the end, but it's a much-needed result for the under-form Grosjean.
Sauber duo Charles Leclerc and Marcus Ericsson finished ninth and 10th.
"Maybe short term, more work to do, but long term, from where I sit, absolutely the right decision".
