The indictment by special counsel Robert Mueller targets 12 Russian intelligence officers for engaging in a sustained effort to hackDemocrats and aides to Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Members of the House Freedom Caucus moved a step closer to that on Friday, around the same time Rosenstein was announcing new indictments against a dozen Russian intelligence officers who interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Politico reported on Friday.
Before Friday, 20 people and three companies had been charged in the Mueller investigation. "Time for Mueller to end this pursuit of the President and say President Trump is completely innocent", Giuliani said in his tweet.
After the indictments were announced, top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer called on Mr Trump to cancel his meeting with Mr Putin until Russian Federation takes steps to prove it will not interfere in future elections.
During a joint news conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday, Mr Trump also said the Russian Federation collusion allegations dogging his presidency were "pure stupidity". If that link is established, it would shatter the Kremlin denials of the Russian state's involvement in the US elections given that the GRU is part of the state machine.
"I love the United States", Trump continued.
"The internet allows foreign adversaries to attack Americans in new and unexpected ways", Rosenstein said.
"It is standard operating procedure that the DOJ does not name people in indictments unless they are being indicted", he said. According to pages 15 and 16 of today's federal indictment, a candidate for Congress sought out Guccifer 2.0 in order to obtain stolen documents on his/her opponent. Anything you do, it's always going to be, "Oh, Russia, he loves Russia".
None of the charges allege Trump advisers colluded with Russian Federation to interfere with the presidential campaign.
A few hours before the indictments were announced, Trump described the Mueller investigation as a "rigged witch hunt" that is hurting the U.S. relationship with Russian Federation.
That evening, the indictment says, the Russians attempted to break into email accounts used by Clinton's personal office, along with 76 Clinton campaign email addresses. They plan to hold a one-on-one meeting in Helsinki.
The ministry's statement blames "influential political forces of the United States, who oppose the normalization of relations between our countries and have been manufacturing blatant slander for two years". Indeed, an indictment that directly points to Russian President Vladimir Putin makes it much more hard for critics to dismiss Russia's culpability in election hacking as unproven. "I did it. You got me.' There won't be a Perry Mason here", he said.
"I will absolutely, firmly ask the question, and hopefully we'll have a good relationship with Russian Federation", he told a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May.
