The first steps of the new government of Ontario will be aiming at the abolition of the Liberal party proposed a plan to increase payments to social programs Ontario Disability Support Program and Ontario Works 3%.
On Tuesday, Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod announced a review of the entire slate of income assistance programs provided by Ontario.
The project had been launched last year by the previous Liberal government as what was supposed to be a three-year trial to determine whether it would be an effective way to help move low-income people out of poverty.
"It's reprehensible, reprehensibly irresponsible to announce the end of the pilot without thinking those things through about how they're going to wind up the program and how they are going to support people", she said, "This is the government taking a political course of action without thinking things through the ramifications [for] these real people who have huge stresses in their lives now". She went on: "We want to get people back on track and be productive members of society where that's possible".
There are approximately 4,000 people enrolled in the program. It was created to evaluate whether providing more money to people on public assistance or low incomes would make a significant difference in their lives.
While Regehr doesn't think Ottawa should be bailing Ford out, "if he really refuses and will not budge, participants in this pilot shouldn't suffer", she said.
The government is also scrapping an experiment with a universal basic income the Liberals started in Hamilton, Brantford, Brant County, Lindsay and Thunder Bay and its surroundings.
"I knew it was coming every month", she said.
How is a 1.5-per-cent increase to welfare rates kinder to recipients than a three-per-cent hike? "It's possible there may even be an increase in demand for social assistance because of it".
Single participants get up to $17,000 a year and couples $24,000.
"I live with a person with a disability day-to-day and I'm involved in it through advocacy and it's still hard for me to understand the varying life situations of people in Ontario", she said.
Basic income programmes are being tested out around the world.
"The PC government has now broken its promise to keep the BIG pilot".
If the latter moves forward as planned, Stockton will be the first USA city government to give a basic income program a shot. More than 2,000 additional individuals are volunteering as participants in the study without receiving monthly payments. "There are more compassionate ways the government could save money without targeting the most vulnerable".
