Together, the fires haves destroyed 75 homes and 68 other structures, while threatening more than 9,300 others.
Sunday was a "really good day for the River Fire", Cal Fire Operations Section Chief Charlie Blankenheim said during his evening update on the Mendocino Complex fires, explaining that personnel had begun "mopping up" and shifting focus to the Ranch Fire, which grew another 25,000 acres overnight to exceed 200,000 acres.
The twin wildfires, collectively known as the Mendocino Complex Fire, have together more than doubled in size in just the past four days and burned through 273,664 acres or 427 square miles of parched land - an area nearly the size of Los Angeles.
"I can remember a couple of years ago when we saw 10 to 12,000 firefighters in the states of California, Oregon and Washington and never the 14,000 we see now", he said.
For the period from January 1 through July 29, 2018, there were 3,770 California wildfires.
"There's nothing that California water policy has done that makes these fires worse or more hard to fight", Gleick said. The Carr Fire has displaced more than 40,000 people, while the Mendocino Complex Fire has grown to the fifth-largest in state history.
As for the "bad environmental laws", it's unclear whether Trump means California laws or federal laws. But the number of acres burned this year at 292,455 is about 50 percent higher than the 219,369 acres burnt last year and more than double the 118,811-acre average for the last 5 years.
Overall, experts say Trump's Twitter remarks ignore two of the biggest factors in the wildfires: Climate change, which is likely exacerbating the droughts that lead to fires, and increased development near forests that makes the fires more risky to life and property.
Farther north near Redding, the Carr Fire has claimed a seventh life.
Firefighters have achieved more than 40 percent containment of that fire, which had reached into remote areas of the country's third-oldest national park.
Another blaze that ignited last week in the Sierra Nevada has damaged a historic Northern California resort in the Stanislaus National Forest. The state's fire agency, CalFire, said it has not had problems accessing water.
