People close to McGahn told the Times that he made a decision to fully cooperate with Mueller because he feared Trump was setting him up to take the fall for any potential illegal activity, including obstruction of justice.
Andy adds that the Times' account of what went down in the McGahn interviews "bolsters the already strong argument that the president should not agree to be interviewed by the special counsel".
"I am going to do whatever I can personally to try to prevent these abuses in the future and if it means going to court, I will do that", Brennan told "Meet the Press".
McGahn's attorney William Burck added in a statement: "President Trump, through counsel, declined to assert any privilege over Mr McGahn's testimony, so Mr McGahn answered the Special Counsel team's questions fulsomely and honestly, as any person interviewed by federal investigators must".
Legal experts and former White House counsels said the president's lawyers had been careless in not asking McGahn what he had planned to tell Mueller's prosecutors.
On Saturday, John Dean tweeted that McGahn is doing the right thing. "The president wrongly believed that Mr. McGahn would act as a personal lawyer would for clients and exclusively defend his interests to investigators, according to a person with knowledge of his thinking".
McCarthy says, though, that the Mueller investigation is not about prosecuting Trump. Dowd and Cobb believed that the cooperation would help prove that the president had done nothing wrong and bring a swifter end to the investigation. Last week, while paying tribute to Aretha Franklin, Trump wrote that headline when he said, "She worked for me on numerous occasions". But McGahn has viewed his role as a protector of the presidency, not of Trump, and people close to the president now believe it was a mistake to have cooperated so fully with the special counsel.
Trump did not say whether he would ultimately agree to be interviewed by Mueller. Trump's attorneys, including Rudy Giuliani, assumed McGahn would do Trump no damage.
McGahn has told Mueller's team that he never personally witnessed Trump breaking the law, but the information he has divulged could be potentially damaging. Rather, it's about writing a report that Congress might use to impeach the president. The driver and passenger, both USA citizens, were arrested, the Laredo Morning Times reported.
In a series of angry tweets Sunday, Trump insisted Sunday that White House lawyer Don McGahn isn't "a John Dean type 'RAT,"' making reference to the Watergate-era White House attorney who turned on Richard Nixon.
It was the first time the president has equated the investigation to McCarthyism on Twitter.
In the conversation - which occurred over lunch at a table on the sidewalk outside the Washington steakhouse BLT - Cobb discussed the White House's production of documents to Mueller's office.
Moreover, two of the things that Mueller's team apparently focused on in the McGahn's interviews were, essentially, non-actions.
Darren Beattie, a policy aide and speechwriter in Donald Trump's White House, has exited their position.
