At least one person has died in the Majerhat Bridge collapse in Kolkata and around 19 injured are undergoing treatment at the hospital even as rescuers continued to dig through the debris to reach those still feared trapped.
A total of 25 injured people have been rushed to hospital.
ARMY, Navy and CISF teams were deployed to assist the NDRF, Fire Brigade and the Kolkata Police in the rescue operation.
The Chief Minister, who is on an administrative visit to Darjeeling, said that a high-powered committee headed by the state Chief Secretary would probe the collapse. He said, "We have called in the cranes, let them pull up the debris, however, as per information, no one else is trapped under the debris". Action will be taken against those whose negligence caused the accident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief. Rescue operations were on until late night. My thoughts are with the families of the victims. There was a pit in the bridge and the PWD and Railways should have noticed that and maintained the bridge.
Banerjee said she will visit the site on Wednesday cutting short her tour.

An official report later blamed that accident on bad design and poor-quality materials.
The Majerhat Bridge was built about five decades ago over the Sealdah-Budge Budge suburban railway line.
The flyover had collapsed on March 31 last killing 26 people and senior officials of a Hyderabad-based construction firm along with officials of the KMDA were arrested in this connection. Traffic from various parts of South 24 Parganas and Behala area in the city were being diverted from Diamond Park area. President Ram Nath Kovind said he was "sorry to learn" about the partial bridge collapse.
It was the second major road collapse in Calcutta in recent years.
