Saul "Canelo" Álvarez has completed a remarkable turnaround of fortunes to defeat Gennady Golovkin and win the WBC and WBA middleweight belts after an exhilarating bout at the T-mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo Alvarez believes he fully merited a controversial points victory which ended Gennady Golovkin's 40-fight unbeaten career record. On the eve of Mexican Independence Day, "The Pride Of Guadalajara", Mexico, finally triumphed.
"I had a great experience from the first fight", Golovkin said. "It was a clear victory".
But Golovkin was never able to press home his advantage, and each time Alvarez was able to evade the looming danger to slide away and respond with blows of his own.
If Golovkin had things his way, the two fighters would've been in the ring three years earlier when the Kazakh fighter was closer to his peak.
That fight stands as the lone loss on his fight resume, and Alvarez is now in position to dictate terms for as long as he wants to continue in the sport. "I'm very emotional", said Alvarez, who has previously held world titles at middleweight and light-middleweight.
The first six rounds were scored as followed: Canelo won rounds 2, 3, 5 and 6, whilst Golovkin took 1 and 4 (on all four cards).
With much respect for sports enthusiasts like LeBron, I think we should leave the rest of the floor space for the boxing intelligentsia to comment on the final result.
ETHAN MILLER GETTY IMAGES Canelo Alvarez celebrates after his majority decision win over Gennady Golovkin
"Canelo fought a great fight, congratulations".
"My corner told me that I needed to win the final round and that what's I did".
Despite throwing less punches overrall, Canelo landed far more power shots after completely changing tactics from their 2017 meeting. He's a very good fighter. "They saw the fight in Canelo's favor tonight".
The decision was more respectable than the one from a year ago, when Golovkin appeared to rally from a slow start to outbox Alvarez and defend his title. Canelo also has something to prove, will he be able to back up all of his pre-fight smack?
But with scoring already criticised in their first bout before Alvarez's two failed doping tests in February, it is perhaps not surprising that once again controversy will remain attached to this rivalry, with talk of a rematch nearly certain. It was a technical battle in which Alvarez's skill and quickness edged it out.
Between 2009 and 2016, Golovkin knocked out 22 consecutive opponents.
The acrimony was forgotten in the aftermath of Saturday's bout, with both men embracing in the ring.
