- Karl-Anthony Towns has reportedly signed a five-year, $190 million extension to his contract to remain in Minnesota.
ESPN ran a statement from Towns that read: "On June 25, 2015, I was drafted to and committed to the Minnesota Timberwolves". "On September 22nd, 2018, I made a recommitment to the Wolves and have the same feelings of excitement that I felt back in 2015".
Further complicating matters is the fact that Butler has missed at least 15 games in four of the last five seasons - including 23 last season, many of which came after a knee injury, and subsequent surgery.
None of the team's on Butler's list of preferred destinations would have a serious shot at taking down the Warriors, or even making an Eastern Conference playoff run.
Symbolically, it hands Towns the keys to the franchise as the Timberwolves prepare to deal Butler. They wanted direction on how to proceed with Butler, and Taylor told them: Butler is available in trade talks, and I want it done sooner than later, sources said.
It's a unusual time in Minnesota right now, as the franchise is dealing with the fact that Jimmy Butler has submitted a trade request, one which Tom Thibodeau is hesitant to honor and owner Glen Taylor wants to oblige. The disgruntled shooting guard had a tumultuous first season in Minnesota after being traded by the Bulls, along with Justin Patton, for Zach Lavine, Kris Dunn and Lauri Markkanen.
He quickly turned into one of the best young centers in the league after being drafted with the top pick in 2015.
Butler averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists in 59 games for the Timberwolves last season. The team opens training camp on Tuesday.
