ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - There have been many moments since the Denver Broncos convened for their first on-field practices in May, when Demaryius Thomas could be seen talking to rookies Courtland Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton about some of the finer points of the work to be done as an National Football League wide receiver.
"It was hard, it's always hard", Elway said of the conversation - but what the Broncos could get for Thomas now in compensation made the trade a reality. He and a 2019 7th round pick were swapped out for the Texans' 4th and 7th round picks in the 2019 Draft.
Dorsett, a former first-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts, got off to a hot start this season, his second in New England.
You know who doesn't believe the latter rumor? At that point, the Broncos might be in position to bring Thomas back as a free agent. The Broncos don't play the Patriots this year.
Their next scheduled game against the Patriots will be a road game in 2020. There's rumored to be plenty of interest in Thomas from other teams, and when the Patriots are motivated to make a deal, they understand that draft picks are unproven commodities and more than just about any other team, they have been willing to trade picks for proven veterans. The 25-year-old had at least seven targets and four receptions in three of his first four games, and seemed to be developing a strong rapport with quarterback Tom Brady.
Thomas will have the chance to face his former team in just five days, as the Texans face the Broncos in Mile High Stadium on November 4.
